The New Japanese Empire
The Japanese Empire is a new celestial homeland for the people of Japan established in Year 9 following many years of Japan being ignored by DECO. Until the establishment of the Empire, the only extraction of Japanese had been under Chinese control and resulted in severe mistreatment of the Japanese.
Composition
The Empire exists initially as a single colony called Kuniumi where a member of the Japanese royal family has been installed as colonial governor. Should the Emperor believe that establishing additional colonies and joining them to the empire would help improve the fortunes of the Japanese people, he would not hesitate to do so. There is no imperative to grow the empire beyond a single world, but economic imperatives may suggest the wisdom of doing so.
Governance
The Japanese consider the governor "Emperor" choosing to ignore Confederacy traditions for titles and naming conventions and instead using their own. Their government is similar to that of Japan in the early 1900's and is a pure monarchy.
Foreign Relations
The Japanese Empire is a full member of the Confederacy, actively participating in trade with other colonies and willing to fight in the war. It is reluctant however to subject its military forces to the control of others, and fiercely protective of their independence.
The Japanese are extremely distrustful of DECO and Earth authorities, who they believe were at the very least reluctant to save any Japanese citizens on Earth for reasons of racial and political animus, or too willing to bow to Chinese interests even if it means the genocide for the Japanese people. Japan and China are quite hostile to each other, and China has a dominant voice in the UN which makes relations between the Empire and Earth somewhat tense at times, particularly when Chinese interests are involved.
In order to facilitate removal of more Japanese people from Earth an "agreement" was reached with DECO and CENTCOM to allow the Empire to extract Japanese people on their own, free from interference or external control, in exchange for the Empire assuming responsibility for military operations in the Serpent Salient area. That agreement also allows extraterrestrial Japanese industrial interests, such as moonbases, to be considered sovereign Empire territory and free from inspections or regulation by CENTCOM, and prohibits any inspection or seizure of Empire vessels in Earthat space engaged in peaceful commerce or performing allied military operations.
Local Issues
Nearby space includes the failed Chinese colony Rek as well as the Serpent Salient incursion by the Sa'arm.
