Fleet Auxiliary

The Fleet Auxiliary
The Fleet Auxiliary is one of the Confederacy's four Uniformed Services. It manages the Diaspora's logistical and transportation service. By its charter, the Fleet Auxiliary is nominally under the control of the Navy, but the FA generally operates independently of the other services. In times of crisis the SOPA ("Senior Officer Present Afloat", the senior Naval officer present) will give orders to any Fleet Auxiliary asset (personnel, ships, and/or facilities). The Fleet Auxiliary performs the following services:
Logistical Support to the Fleet
The Fleet Auxiliary provides logistical support ships to provide for the refueling and replenishment of deployed ships, using freighters and pods modified as necessary in order to move resources to the ships needing them. Few stories make specific mention of fleet logistical support operations, as getting replenished is not as sexy as spaceships shooting stuff up.
'Shoreside' Logistical Support
The Fleet Auxiliary maintains and provisions warehouses for stores and goods needed by the Navy to construct, maintain and supply ships. Fleet Auxiliary transport vessels obtain the materials needed either locally or inter-colonially and maintain supply depots for the Navy to draw on. The FA does not generally handle ordnance for the Navy or Marines in a live combat zone, as that is a Naval Supply responsibility.
Colonist Transportation
The Fleet Auxiliary handles the movement of all colonists from Earth to colonies under the direction of DECO and is in charge of constructing all ships used for that purpose. It also is in charge of planetary discovery and survey to facilitate colonization.
Personnel Transportation
The Fleet Auxiliary handles personnel shuttling between colonies and to a small degree cargo operations between colonies that have a military value for the Navy or Marines.
Fleet Auxiliary History
The Darjee provided and crewed the transports used early in the evacuation effort but because of their nature suffered badly due to their interaction with humans. It was found necessary to train human crews to replace the Darjee. Because of the nature of this work it suited those who had been in the Merchant Marine or surprisingly the hotel trade before they were extracted.
The Navy didn't want to have to provide trained combat sailors to crew these noncombatant vessels, so the Fleet Auxiliary was formed - originally described as "civilians under military discipline in time of war".
As more humans found themselves in space the options for service increased until a small group of people, working under the auspices of the Fleet Auxiliary, set off to explore the galaxy.
