Confederacy Military

This article discusses a subject with undecided "Canon". The Swarm Cycle writers need to discuss this on the email list, come to a decision, and then update this article to let readers know what Swarm Cycle "true canon" is.

Introduction
At the time of the Sa'arm incursion the Confederacy had been at peace for the better part of 100,000 years and as such had only the vaguest knowledge of what warfare was all about. As a result stories have indicated that the human-staffed military units were the entirety of the Confederacy military forces, at least to their knowledge. No other Confederacy military units outside of those from humans have ever been identified in stories.
There is a common rank structure shared by the Marine and Navy units. These are the primary combat units.
Expansion
As a result of the Darjee's intervention the human race ended up becoming the field forces for the Confederacy military.
As no real guidance was given the humans carried their own organizational structures and ideas into space, including a modified Uniform Code of Justice.
The initial concept was for a dozen colonies each acting as the base from which operations against the Sa'arm could be mounted. This quickly expanded to include the entire system that the colony occupied to allow for the various facilities that were necessary.
The Navy often ended up on the moon of an outer gas giant to facilitate the rapid deployment of its vessels against any threat.
Field Forces
The original military personal came from the United States Marine Corps and the AI's adopted their rank structure for all forces. This implied that the Navy would lose a lot of its familiar titles. As a means of mitigating this it was considered prudent to retain the title of Captain for all vessels regardless of the actual rank of the commander. See also What is a Pilot and Gallantry Awards.
The Navy is the source of portable heavy weapons platforms ( Warships ) capable of long-term independent deployment of combat power in deep space and in orbit around planets.
The Marines are the highly mobile strike troops; they rely upon the Navy for transport and orbital support, but can and do operate on the surface during battle.
The Army is a collection of the individual planetary militias of the colony worlds. As such it was never expected to be seen in the field, its only employment being on a planetary basis.
Earth was considered to be a military force in its own right. Weapons would be provided as and when it became apparent that the Sa'arm were in a position to invade the planet.
In addition to these forces there were other organizations that had a quasi-military or support role. These included the Fleet Auxiliary, the merchant and the Civil Service.
