Particle Accelerator Beams
The Heavy (HPAB), Medium (MPAB), and Light Particle Accelerator Beam (LPAB) weapons are the most effective of the weapons our inherited ships came with. They are fairly quick to fire with almost light-speed effect, but not destructive enough to destroy an enemy without multiple hits. To help ensure multiple hits, they are often set in twin turrets that can either fire together for maximum effect on a shield, or offset by a fraction of a second to allow one to penetrate armor and the other to damage whatever is behind the armor that just got penetrated. Lighter ships can only carry individual guns.
By the time of Behind Enemy Lines by deGaffer (covers month 28 in the timeline) Particle Beam turrets are described as obsolete technology and "pulse cannons" were sometimes used replaced them.
The Sa'arm use this technology on their ships for point-defense weapons (ref: Pyrrhic Victory by akarge).
