Marine Expeditionary Force

A Marine expeditionary force (MEF) is the largest type of a Marine air-ground task force. A MEF is the largest building block of Confederacy Marine Corps combat power.

Structure

An MEF is larger than a Marine expeditionary unit (MEU) or Marine expeditionary brigade (MEB).

Each MEF consists of a command element known as a MEF Information Group (MIG), a Marine division (MARDIV) as the ground combat element, a Marine aircraft wing (MAW) as the aviation combat element, and a Marine logistics group (MLG) as the logistics support element.

Organization

   A MEF also commands several smaller subunits, including MEBs and MEUs.  The following is taken from Duke of Ramus' ~2008 article explaining where he was going with his Alex Flowers and David ap Rhys stories.  Swarm Cycle 'canon' may or may not have developed the way he planned.  As he saw it, the 3rd Marine Expeditionary Force would eventually be:
   One of the new 'large' formations being built form the ground up.  3MEF will be based in the Poseidon system with the ground components on Demeter and the Air Wing and support ships on Persephone.
   3MEF at full strength will consist of three infantry regiments (3rd, 4th and 9th Marines), an artillery regiment (16th Marines), two Force Recon battalions, an assault landing regiment, a full logistics group (with medical, dental, service support and logistics units) and an Air Wing.  All of this adds up to thirty thousand troops plus their equipment.  3MEF Headquarters has three independent Brigade headquarters groups to give it a flexible all-arms force that really is going to give the lizards a hard time.
   The Navy contingent I pictured as providing a Close Support Carrier (Marine aviation equipped with interface fighter/ground attack craft), Assault ships (Tarawa style sufficient to carry the Marines), Orbital bombardment monitors, Command ships, Logistic support and a Hospital ship - any other ships would be added on an ad-hoc basis depending on the mission.

List of MEFs

   (No, listing the MEFs here is silly.  Look at the list of Districts.  #1 MEF is based in the 1st Military District and is headquartered at the 1MD capital, CSS Victory.  #2 MEF is based in the 2nd Military District and is headquartered at the 2MD capital, Truman.  #3 MEF is based in the 3rd Military District and is headquartered at the 3MD capital, Demeter.  The pattern should be clear.)
