Independent Companies of Marines
When the Confederacy first came to Earth looking for help with the Sa'arm, they had no idea how to build a military force that could stop them. As a stopgap measure, twelve companies of Marines were covertly recruited for initial operations against the Sa'arm. Many of were recruited as units directly from one country or another's active duty military forces. As such, they were exclusively male formations with the glaring exception of the 12th company, known as 'The Matrikas'.
These units were recruited during the critical period after first contact (Month -18 thru + 3), but before the CAP scoring system was in place and before the public knew about the Sa'arm threat. Initially, these units were placed aboard the Mercury class of light assault frigates. They were told that their families could join them as soon as a safe place was found for them.
Several units were disbanded or folded into other units, but at year 5, Governor-General Fred Winthrop of Vulcan Colony found out that six of these units were still out there and virtually restricted to their ships other than when on a combat mission. Subsequently these units were assigned to Vulcan Colony and their families were collected to join them. Since 'families' was largely undefined, they were able to extract anyone they wanted within three links, blood or marriage, plus all dependents.

- 3rd Independent Company Originally assigned to Ares
- 4th Independent Company Originally assigned to Zeus - To Vulcan in Year 5. Gorkha unit, includes a band unit complete with 2 pipers.
- 5th Independent Company Originally assigned to Poseidon - a C Team from 5th SFG (initially led by Colonel Fletcher). Personnel rotated several times to give earth forces experienced troops.
- 6th Independent Company Originally assigned to Taranis - Recruited entirely from the British Army's Honourable Artillery Company.
- 7th Independent Company Originally assigned to Apollo - Reassigned to Sir Robin ~Year 2, to Vulcan in Year 5. Recruited from USMC. Served at P'yong Liberation.
- 8th Independent Company Originally assigned to Thor
- 9th Independent Company Originally assigned to Hermes - To Vulcan in Year 5 Various American, Canadian and other NATO Veterans. Served at P'yong Liberation.
- 10th Independent Company Originally assigned to Loki - To Vulcan in Year 5 - Recruited primarily from US Army. Served at P'yong Liberation.
- 11th Independent Company Originally assigned to Indra
- 12th Independent Company Originally assigned to Shiva - To Vulcan in Year 5-Multinational recruitment - All female - 'The Matrikas' - Reported as "militant lesbians, with guns".
