   Cruiser is a generic term for mid-sized warships intended to be capable of general use from direct combat against enemy warships to escorting more important ships to stiffening groups of smaller ships to extended independent operations.  The term comes from their ability, due to redundant systems and self-repair capability, to 'cruise' on their own without dependence on outside resources like external command and control groups or supply and repair ships.  See the article at Cruiser for more information.
