Vulcan Colony
Vulcan is the name of the colony settled by people under the command of Governor-General Fred Winthrop in the Geratat system.
The planet itself is named Gerat. Under the naming convention used by the Confederacy this system is called Geratat and the colony should be Gerat, but the Humans are ignoring that and calling it Vulcan.
The colony is named after the ancient Roman god associated with fire, volcanoes and the working of metal. The planet is tectonically very active and has many active volcanoes. Volcanic eruptions and earthquakes are common with some pollutants in the atmosphere from the volcanoes.
The Confederacy had some terraforming equipment on site already and was making inroads on the air and water pollution by way of a few catalyst stations that bind the pollutants to various soil components. Making Vulcan an active colony caused the program to be stepped up, and it should have much cleaner air within a year. The more stable areas have better air already and the AI has informed the Governor that it is currently not really harmful. It's mainly smelly and good for spectacular sunsets.
Gerat has one small moon, Caeculus. It is named after Vulcan's son. Caeculus is a lot like Earth's moon Luna, but smaller. Caeculus is only about four hundred fifty miles in radius while Luna has about a one thousand mile radius.
Both Vulcan and Caeculus have rings, probably from a smaller rocky moon that broke up eons ago. Vulcan has a large axial tilt, almost 30 degrees compared to Terra's 23 degrees. This means that the seasons will me more extreme than Earth, so there will be rougher weather and a lot of variations in temperature as the seasons go by.
