Swarm Cycle Wiki Info and History
This wiki is the 3rd version for the Swarm Cycle. The first disappeared before I showed up on the scene ~2014, and the assorted authors were busily trying to re-create it on a free wiki hosting site "swarm.freewiki.in". That worked fine for years, but the whole domain abruptly disappeared in late 2023. It wasn't just our wiki, EVERY wiki hosted by freewiki.in disappeared when that domain lost its registration.
As of 4/22/24, this wiki is up for testing and restoration from the last backup. Unfortunately, that backup is dated 2/27/23, so it doesn't have any updates since then.
Now, what I thought was a complete backup appears to be "A complete backup of all text in each page". Since I wasn't a server admin, I guess that was all I was authorized. I have no idea where all the graphics went. Awesome! At least, a lot of the graphics were shared on our DropBox account, so we should be able to restore them from there.
What's worse, the .XML backup file appears to be incompatible with the new software so restoring a page really means open the wiki, create a new page, copy & past from the XML file into the new page, and try to straighten out all the formatting. It's gonna be a while.
This wiki is running MediaWiki v1.41.1, on a domain "TampaAD.net" owned by Zen Master and hosted on a shared server by Dreamhost.com. How well will this work? I have no idea. Still, how many people will use it? How many people will be editing at once? It can't be that many, can it?
For now, I have user access pretty well locked down (or at least I think I do, I'm not a wiki expert) and only have a couple of accounts set up for testing. I will create new ones for published Swarm authors if they email me and ask for one. Interested readers, too, some people don't want to write a story but they're willing to help improve a wiki.
Oh, and since Dreamhost works out of California, we'll have to comply with all US federal and California state laws. Which, of course, none of us are the slightest bit familiar with. Great.
At least, now I can really make a complete functional backup. Once we have enough content to make it worthwhile.
