Shipboard Point-Defense Laser System
A Point-Defense Laser or PDL is a weapon mount that uses a small laser to damage or destroy incoming threats. As long as the "threat" is unmanned, ie an asteroid, a missile, or similar, it can be fired under AI control. No human gunner is required unless the target is "manned".
The PDL mount does relatively little damage compared to larger weapon systems, but it has a fast slew rate and high accuracy, and is effectively an "infinite repeater"; as long as it has power and someone occasionally changes out its two auto-feed magazines it will continue to shoot at its assigned target. When under AI control it participates in overall ship or fleet defense but a local gunner can assume control of the mount if needed. The gunner can use local computer targeting or manually control the mount's aiming mechanism.
