Nuevo Angelino

Nuevo Angelino

   Nuevo Angelino "...was to be a huge naval base and shipyard."  It is mentioned in two stories.  The first governor was unhappy with dependent education and sent at team to bring back a school, using the first "Cube" ship on its trials voyage.  As of last report, the Governor was Col. Sharpe.  The Lt. Governor was Major Howard.

The Planet

   The sky has an orangish tint when viewed from the ground and has little native land-life.  The Academy has:
   "Nuevo Angelino was a little spare and barren and you couldn't stay outside for prolonged periods without an environment suit because of trace gasses in the atmosphere -- but that was pretty similar to L.A., wasn't it? Confederacy technology created a little gadget that you wore around your neck and it generated a field around your head that filtered things, so you could go outside and hardly notice the difference. They were freely available by the door, so I affixed one to each of our women's collars and led them outside."
and
   "The women padded around in their flip-flops, kicking up sand and examining the low scrub that was the primary vegetation in the area and making 'ooohs' and 'aaahs' at various things in sight.  In the distance was the ocean; it probably wasn't any more poisonous than Earth's, but most of Nuevo Angelino's life forms did battle with each other there instead of on land, which made the waters treacherous outside of beach resort areas where big predators were held off by force fields."

   "In the first place, certain of the restrictions placed upon us by the Confederacy regarding concubine conduct and sponsor responsibility for same have tended to be expressed somewhat more harshly that is absolutely necessary. Concubines are a resource -- a valuable resource -- and disposal of a concubine more or less at will by a sponsor just isn't done on Nuevo Angelino. I won't say that disposal of a concubine for any one of several reasons never occurs, but it doesn't without due process -- or a review at the very least. We're going to want to assign concubine-class teachers to sponsors -- or, at the very least, to a staff contact from the Support Directorate who will ensure that their needs are taken care of. They -- everyone, actually -- WILL inherit the secondary mission of propagating the human species, but the extended nature of the family unit on Nuevo Angelino is designed to facilitate sharing child-rearing responsibilities, so the impacts to their function as teachers should be minimized."

   Bernie Rawlins, my IT Department head, for instance, managed to collect his wife, his three children, his wife's sister and one of the children's friends -- a young female of the concubine persuasion. That was six, three of whom were concubines. Of course, Bernie was eligible for four BEFORE the increase that the government of Nuevo Angelino had so generously provided...

   "We do indeed," Major Howard agreed. "Your staff is doing a fine job of turning out sponsor-capable students -- and you don't ignore skills that improve the value of concubines in the process. We have several thousand school-aged children on Nuevo Angelino who are NOT receiving a proper education -- a situation that virtually guarantees that they will not ascend to sponsorship status. This is unacceptable -- we MUST have a high percentage of the upcoming generation qualify for sponsorship and assume the ongoing responsibility for the conflict with the Sa'arm, because there is no easy fix -- neutralizing the Sa'arm won't occur any time soon. To stop them requires not only a large quantity of human troops -- those troops have to be of adequate quality to make their mark! Today, if we lose one human in the process of killing a thousand Sa'arm, we lose! The Governor believes that proper education is a force multiplier that we cannot ignore."

   We got beyond concubines and into discussions of basic Confederacy rules and customs and specifics about Nuevo Angelino and how the Civil Service role had expanded there -- and the risks and benefits that went with the flood of colonists we hadn't met yet from the big school pickup. We spent a lot of time learning, 'This is how things USUALLY happen, but THIS is how we're doing it THIS time... '; it seemed like you really needed to know the traditional rules so you could understand how we were breaking them -- and why.

   Earth. Frankly, I never thought I'd see the home world again. I got extracted in Year Three of the Diaspora in a classic pickup from a fast food restaurant and transported in a thousand-pod transport to the new colony of Nuevo Angelino, along with a shitload of other Californians (and Mexicans and transplants from a whole lot of other places doing the whole migration to the Land of Opportunity thing). Well, Nuevo Angelino was undoubtedly going to be a better opportunity than anything available in East L. A. after the Swarm hit, so I was more than pleased.

   When the presence of the unobtainium was revealed, it was immediately snapped up by the Navy. We were sincerely thanked. 'Sic transit divitiae mundi.' I was in demand to provide debriefings to everybody and their committees. I even started getting begging letters from the University of Nuevo Angelino for me to write my memoirs for their history department.
